Fencing Hurstpierpoint

Hardwood is one of the best timbers for fencing options as it’s strong, durable wood that’s incredibly aesthetically pleasing. Each hardwood has its own individual texture, colour and grain to ensure your fence has its own unique appearance.

When treating a new fence or a bare wood one that hasn’t been treated for a number of years, we highly recommend treating the fence panels with 2 coats of an exterior wood preservative prior to oiling. This helps to protect the timber from biological threats such as mould, algae and wood-boring insects.

Most of the time, staining is better than painting a fence. It’s true that stain eventually fades and must be reapplied, but not for several years. Also, because stain doesn’t peel or crack, it requires less preparation than repainting. Simply power wash the fence to produce a clean, prepped surface for staining.

Every two to three years, clean the wood to remove dirt, moss, mildew and graying. Then, recoat with a UV inhibiting, water-repellent coating. After making repairs, scrape off any moss or loose, peeling paint until you can see new wood, and clean the fence with a pressure washer.

An essential step in the fence installation process is to seal the wood on your fence. Sealing a wood fence will save it from swelling and turning gray from exposure to the elements. You could pay a professional to put a sealer on your fence, but it’s not necessary.

When properly maintained, which includes replacing individual planks and boards as needed, a well-built wooden fence can last in good condition for up to 20 years or more.

Redwood, cedar or pressure-treated pine last the longest. A fence can last about 20 years if made of turnout-resistant wood. Then posts are usually the first to go; panels survive longer because they typically don’t touch the ground. Fences must withstand year-round exposure to the element.

In most applications, a wood fence should be installed at least two inches off the ground. Your posts and rot boards (if you choose to install them) should be the only fence components that contact the ground. Wood pickets should never touch it.
